Bolton Metro Swimming Squad (BMSS) seeks a talented, passionate and motivated coach to join our dynamic team. The successful candidate will lead the Age Group Development and Age Group Squads, working closely with BMSS Head Coach and our local community swimming clubs.

Job Title: Head Age Group Coach – Age Group Development and Age Group Squads

Responsible to: Head Coach and Committee

Job Type: Self-employed (minimum of 13- 15 hours of poolside coaching). Job share would be considered for appropriate candidates.

Our swimmers span a broad spectrum, from novices embarking on their competitive swimming journey to those making waves at British Nationals. Our comprehensive training programmes provide ample opportunities for growth and development.

BMSS has an impressive track record of securing positions in National, Regional, and County Championships and Para World Championships. We take immense pride in our 2 Para swimmers this season, aiming to qualify for the Paris Para Olympics in 2024. Our overriding aim is to positively impact the development of our members both as swimmers and, more importantly, as confident and happy individuals.

The successful candidate(s) will be supported and developed by our Head Coach who has British Championships and national titles, British, European and World records from his swimming career and has held the head coach position at BMSS for over 6 years,  being head coach at another club before that. Our Head Coach has been recognised by Swim England and coached many talent camps. Your development will be important to us, the BMSS committee and coaching team will endeavour to support relevant CPD opportunities as identified in personal development plans.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead the Age Group Development and Age Group Squads, working closely with the Head Coach in their overall development.
  • Support the Head Coach when required in coaching the Performance Squads.
  • Collaborate with the coaching team to foster the Squad’s goals and philosophy.
  • Contribute to the planning and execution of training and competition cycles and catering to individual swimmers’ needs, encompassing goal setting, monitoring, evaluations, and progression planning, administrative duties including planning and monitoring, preparing for galas, and participating in coach/parent/squad meetings.
  • Cultivate strong relationships and partnerships with neighbouring swimming clubs.
  • Support the Head Coach and committee in strategies to build and maintain membership numbers.
  • Engage actively and contribute to club communications, including social media, newsletters, and post-competition reports.
  • Provide reports to the committee and Head Coach as required.
  • Plan and run land training sessions.
  • Organise and lead training camps for Age Group Squads.
  • To actively engage in personal development, identifying personal learning needs alongside the Head Coach and committee. Formulate and complete action plans.
  • Contribute and support activities that support squad finances, for example, running internal gals, charitable fundraising events etc. 

Essential Criteria:

  • Possess the Swim England Swimming Coach Certificate/UKCC Level 2 Coaching qualification or equivalent or higher.
  • Demonstrate experience working with Age Group swimmers (preferably at County and Regional standards), displaying an understanding of developmental progression, technical requisites, and performance planning at this level.
  • Uphold the Club’s philosophy and desired performance behaviours, as directed by the Head Coach.
  • Be a positive role model, effective communicator, and enthusiastic professional.
  • Display a commitment to personal and professional growth through Continuing Professional Development and active involvement within the coaching team.
  • Hold the right to work in the UK and hold a current DBS.
  • Advocate and adhere to Swim England’s Wavepower policies concerning safeguarding and child protection.
  • Showcase exceptional organisational, time management, reliability, and administrative skills.
  • Exhibit the ability to communicate effectively with young individuals, parents, and coaching colleagues.
  • Possess the capability to motivate and inspire our swimmers to maintain their love for the sport of swimming.

Desirable Qualifications and Skills:

  • Possess knowledge of swimming at the national level or higher.
  • Bring experience working within a club environment.
  • Hold a recognised land training qualification.
  • Have proficiency in water safety, with either the RLSS National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) or RLSS National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers and Coaches (NRASTC). To adhere to Pool Provider (Serco) policies with regards to ongoing CPD to maintain lifeguard competency, (further details provided on request).
