“Coaching Conversations” are a series of podcasts being brought to you as BSCA members. It’s essentially swimming coaches, talking to swimming coaches about swimming coaching (sound familiar??). More are in the pipeline and we look forward to hearing from you about who you would like to hear from and what topics you’d like us to cover – we’ll do our best to oblige! Podcast 5 – Patrick Miley

Patrick Miley is a globally renowned coach with international honours spanning over many many years. Whilst he’s now Head of Performance at Aberdeen University, running a programme of national & international significance to both Scottish Swimming and AquaticsGB, it is easy to forget the very humble beginnings of his voluntary career in a small town club in North East Scotland, from which he produced one of the World’s best swimmers.

This podcast discusses those early days, the facilities & access he had & the environment he developed from which more than Hannah Miley appeared. How it grew, developed & is truly a heartening tale of success over adversity. This is a story for all regardless of level, of the development of a dream that became an obsession, which became a career. Well worth the watch & listen.

Podcast 4 – Mikey Hire

Mikey Hire, Performance Swim Coach at Ellesmere College Swimming Academy, talks to Kim about how he first got involved in coaching, his approach to annual planning in a school environment and how he prepares his athletes for race day.

Podcast 3 – Ian Hulme

Ian Hulme is an accomplished high-performance swim coach with over a decade of experience in elite athlete development.  Former Head Coach at Loughborough University, Ian has led the UK’s premier swimming program to national and international success, mentoring athletes to 58 Senior International Medals. This podcast will dive into Ian’s coaching journey, his insights into developing world-class swimmers, and his experiences at the forefront of elite sports.

Ian Armiger (Mentoring, Technical and Strategic Consultant to Coaches and Swimming Programmes) discusses a range matters with Kim focussing around planning & programming, as well as prepping for focus meets.

Podcast 1 – Nathan Hilton (AquaticsGB)

This podcast touches upon Nathan’s recent sojourn to Paris for the 2024 Olympic Open Water events, but primarily deals with the development of his career to get to the point where he was in such a position.

From small clubs, to regional hub to large national programme and then working for the NGB. He discusses what he had to do to develop such programmes at each stage, the challenges he faced and how he overcame them. It is a tantalising glimpse into the hurdles & pitfalls that every successful coach has to overcome to become an achiever in their sport. Good job Nathan!
